Are You on a School Waiting List?
Waiting in line is no fun. At least it used to be no fun. Today, it doesn’t seem to bother people as much as it did before the distraction of smartphones, which allow people to scroll through social media feeds as a way of killing time.
On a related note, what about waitlists? Is it frustrating that other people got their names in place before you? Do you have any real hope that someone will drop out, providing an open slot?
With parents being more intentional than ever as they decide how to educate their kids, a large number of families have opted out of public school. We’re talking millions of students. What alternatives have they sought? Many decided to start their own homeschooling journey. Many others chose private school. But here’s the deal. Private schools rely on brick-and-mortar buildings to provide classroom space. And this is a limited commodity with a very real cap. In other words, private schools can only accept so many new students before they must stop enrollment. The result is that waiting lists at private schools have skyrocketed.
This may sound good in one regard. After all, families are finally seeing the light and walking away from the failing public schools. But what about the wait-list students who don’t get in because the private school simply doesn’t have enough space? What are they supposed to do?
Charter schools are another option, but it takes luck to get into one of those institutions. What do I mean by that? Often, families have to win a lottery to get their children into charter schools. The odds of getting in depend on how many people desire the same thing. And the “winners” are chosen at random. That sounds like luck to me! And once again, the unlucky find themselves forced to go with a different educational option.
That’s where home education comes back into the picture.
When families decide to homeschool, they don’t get placed on a waitlist, and they don’t have to cross their fingers and hope they get lucky. By virtue of deciding to homeschool, they hold all the cards.
That’s where home education comes back into the picture. When families decide to homeschool, they don’t get placed on a waitlist, and they don’t have to cross their fingers and hope they get lucky. By virtue of deciding to homeschool, they hold all the cards.
Homeschooling requires sacrifice, and it is a big responsibility, but you get to call all the shots. You get to pick the curriculum. You decide all details about the school schedule and calendar. In short, you will enjoy freedom like never before. It takes a bit of an independent spirit to go on this adventure called homeschooling. I like to say, “Let your hair down, sense the sun and wind on your face, and feel the freedom.”
Oh, and you don’t even have to wait in a long drop-off or pickup line. But there’s more. No cafeteria lines. No lines to wait your turn to go to the restroom. You get the idea.
Here’s what you need to know. Private and charter schools are better options than the government-run public versions, but you don’t have as much control as you might imagine. It’s possible your student will find themself on a private school wait list. Or your student’s name could not get selected in a charter school lottery drawing.
When you decide to homeschool, you don’t have to fight these battles just to get started. You don’t have to ask permission. You don’t have to jump through a hoop. You are the parent. You decide. Then hang on, because it’s going to be an amazing ride — a literal adventure. Just remember this. You can do it. And it’s good for your kids.
If there was ever a time to homeschool, it is now!
Walking by faith and enjoying the homeschooling adventure of a lifetime!
