5th Grade Curriculum Bundle
Using Apologia’s science, math, and worldview curricula ensures that your student has an exciting year of exploration and wonder. Following the suggested curriculum path, for 5th Grade, your student will spend the year learning about God’s amazing, intricate design of the human body, learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and decimals, determining the area and volume of a shape, understanding metric conversions, and graphing, as well as beginning to understand that God wants to use them to be a light in the lives of those around them.
Science
Our Young Explorer Series, written by Jeannie Fulbright, was designed to be used in any order, which makes them great for use in families with children of multiple ages. But a popular choice, and the order of our recommended curriculum path, is completing the series in order of Creation.
After God created the planets (1st Grade – Exploring Creation with Astronomy), the plants (2nd Grade – Exploring Creation with Botany), and the animals (3rd Grade – Exploring Creation with Zoology 1-3), He created mankind.
Gen. 1:26 – 27, 31 and Gen. 2:7-8, 18-23
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed.
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”
For fifth grade, consider going through Exploring Creation with Anatomy & Physiology. Whether your student has already expressed an interest in medicine or they are squeamish when it comes to all things medical, it’s important to understand how their body works and how to take care of it before any bad health habits set in.
📖 In Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Anatomy & Physiology, students will explore God’s intricate and amazing design of the human body–from head to toe. This course begins with a brief history of medicine and then gives your student a peek into cells and DNA. Your student will study various body systems, nutrition, and health, how God designed their immune system to protect them, and what makes them a unique creation of God. They will also enjoy conducting scientific experiments and projects, such as testing the bacteria content around the house, finding their blood type, creating a cell model from Jello and candy, and even building a stethoscope!
Math
Did you know that there is a Biblical worldview in math? What if there was an elementary math curriculum that highlighted that worldview while also including lots of fun, hands-on activities, and a mastery approach? Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Mathematics has all that and more!
Our math curricula levels are designed to align with traditional grade levels, so level 5 is typically the best fit for a rising 5th grader.
This curriculum, by Kathryn Gomes, will provide your student with a strong foundation in mathematics using a proven method: the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract progression.
📖 In Exploring Creation with Mathematics, Level 5, students will learn about whole numbers, fractions, decimals, geometry and measurement, percents, and graphing. This hands-on, interactive math curriculum is filled with activities, practice problems, projects, and games that will help students comprehend lessons. Students will also see the connections between math, science, business, art, our world, and our universe. Most importantly, students will begin to see how the study of math points to our Creator.
Worldview
As Christians, we should always be growing in our walk. Instill this concept in your children by completing a Bible or Christian Worldview curriculum every year.
1 Peter 2:2-3
Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
If you are choosing to follow our suggested curriculum path, after completing the What We Believe Series’s second book, “Who Am I? And What Am I Doing Here?,” your student will move on to “Who is My Neighbor? And Why Does He Need Me?”
📖 Who Is My Neighbor? And Why Does He Need Me? This course is designed to engage your elementary student’s hearts and minds and build a spiritual foundation as they learn what it means to be the salt and light to the world. This book is a study designed to encourage and inspire your student to develop a Christlike (servant) attitude. They’ll be given a vision of how God wants to use them in the lives of those around them and become equipped to understand the truth about God, the story He is writing in the world, and how He wants to work in and through us.
